What is AI slop? And how a crowd votes it out

The short answer

AI slop is low-quality content made with generative AI, usually in bulk and without care: videos with melting hands, stiff voices, no story and a title that promises more than it delivers. Merriam-Webster named “slop” its 2025 Word of the Year, and Macquarie Dictionary chose “AI slop”. On StreamingWars every short has a Slop button, and a short enough viewers call slop leaves the ring.

What the word means

“Slop” used to mean watery leftovers fed to pigs. In 2024 and 2025 it became the word for AI content nobody asked for. Cambridge Dictionary added the sense in June 2025: content on the internet of very low quality, especially when created by AI. Macquarie Dictionary made “AI slop” its 2025 Word of the Year, defining it as low-quality content created by generative AI, often containing errors and not requested by the user. In December 2025 Merriam-Webster picked “slop” as its Word of the Year: digital content of low quality, usually produced in quantity by AI.

The key idea in all three: slop is about care, not about the tool. AI video made with a real idea and real attention isn't slop. AI video churned out to fill a feed usually is.

02

How much of your feed is slop

Nobody has an official count, and every study uses its own definition. Two widely cited ones come from Kapwing. In November 2025 it watched 500 YouTube Shorts on a fresh account and classed 104 of them, 21%, as AI slop. In June 2026 it repeated the test on TikTok and classed 294 of 500 For You videos, 59%, as AI slop. Those are samples from new accounts, not platform-wide figures, but they explain why people are tired of it.

The signs of slop in AI video

We had an AI reviewer watch hundreds of shorts made on StreamingWars and list every defect, then checked the worst ones by eye. The same problems came up again and again:

SignWhat you seeWhy it happens
MorphingHands with extra fingers, props that change shape, a person who becomes twoFiddly hand work, crowds and objects passing between people
Floaty physicsStunts with no weight, people gliding, liquids behaving like gelBig physical action is the hardest thing for video models
Stiff speechMouths that don't match, lines delivered like a robotLong lines, close-ups during speech, two lines in one shot
Plastic lookGlossy skin, perfect light, everything too cleanPrestige words like “cinematic, 8K, masterpiece” in the instructions
No storyA pretty scene where nothing changesDescribing a style instead of a person, a problem and a turn
Slow startScenery for three seconds before anything happensNo hook in the opening shot
Bait titleA title the video never pays offTitles written for clicks, not for the short

How StreamingWars deals with slop

  • Every short in the ring has a Slop button next to its title. Tap it and only that short is swapped out; the other keeps playing.
  • One Slop per person per short, and it needs a free account, so nobody can pile on anonymously.
  • A short with at least ten Slop votes, and more Slop than positive votes, leaves the ring. Its creator sees: “Your video was deemed as slop.”
  • Scroll past a pair you don't like and both count as not chosen, except shorts you've voted for or upvoted before.
  • Nothing called slop is ever reposted to StreamingWars' TikTok, YouTube or X.

It's the crowd's call, not ours. Go vote and see what you'd keep.

How not to make slop

  1. 01

Start with a person and a problem

“A night nurse finds every bed made and she's alone on the ward” beats “a scary hospital, cinematic”.

  2. 02

Hook in the first two seconds

Open on a face, a movement or a wrong detail, never on scenery.

  3. 03

    One action per shot

Let the camera do one clear thing at a time. Cut to a new angle instead of cramming.

  4. 04

    Fewer, shorter lines

Under ten words, one per shot, in medium shots. Or let a voice speak off screen.

  5. 05

    Avoid what cameras mangle

Food being eaten, pouring liquids, screens, mirrors, readable text, crowds, fights and fine hand work.

  6. 06

    Land a payoff

The last shot should change what we know. If nothing changes, it's a screensaver.

StreamingWars builds these rules into every short it films: a story spine is written before any shot, and a check runs over the storyboard to rewrite shots that break them. Read how to write AI video prompts for the full list.

Questions people ask

What does AI slop mean?

Low-quality content made with AI, usually in bulk and with little care. Dictionaries define it as low-quality digital content produced by generative AI, often with errors and not asked for.

Who named slop the word of the year?

Merriam-Webster chose “slop” as its 2025 Word of the Year, and Macquarie Dictionary chose “AI slop” as its 2025 Committee's Choice.

Is all AI video slop?

No. Slop is about effort and quality, not the tool. A short with a real idea, a hook and a payoff is a short, whoever or whatever filmed it.

What is the Slop button on StreamingWars?

A downvote next to each short's title in the ring. It swaps that short out, and a short with at least ten Slop votes, outnumbering its positive votes, leaves the ring.

How can I tell if a video is AI slop?

Look for morphing hands or props, weightless movement, stiff speech, a glossy plastic look, a slow start and no story. One flaw isn't slop; a pile of them with no idea underneath is.
